The harvest season comes and goes but once a year. However, your oral health care should be everlasting. No matter the season, you should make sure you continuously brush and floss your teeth. With the fall season coming, you are at a greater risk for numerous sicknesses including colds and the flu. If you happen to find yourself sick, make sure you’re keeping your teeth clean and your mouth cared for.
If you happen to vomit, harmful acids from your stomach can arise up your esophagus and into your mouth. These acids will eat through your tooth enamel and cause tooth decay to occur. Help treat this condition by cleaning your mouth after vomiting. However, never use toothbrush and toothpaste as they can be too abrasive to your sensitive teeth at this time. As an alternative, use mouthwash and sugarless chewing gum.
If you were taking any medications for your sickness including cough drops, exercise caution as they can be hard and potentially chip or crack your teeth. Furthermore, avoid cough drops that have sugars, as the sugars can contribute to dental erosion.
When brushing and flossing your teeth while sick, is important to make sure your utensils are clean. Never share toothbrushes with anyone else or use anyone else’s toothbrush. Furthermore, replace your toothbrush once you’re healed to ensure it can clean your teeth for the future.
